M4A (Apple Lossless Audio) is an audio coding format by Apple, used for storing audio data losslessly without losing any quality, open source and royalty-free.
Unfortunately it is not compatible with all portable audio players or Android phones. This is also the reason why Android phone can’t play M4A.
M4A VS MP3
Video size. M4A can compress audio with the same bit rate in smaller file size than MP3. (M4A format files typically have a stereo bit rate of 128kbps, 192kbps or 256kbps)
Video quality. M4A apples ALAC code has the best original sound quality.
So, if you want to play M4A files on Android phone, converting M4A to MP3 is a good choice. MP3 is still the most popular audio format thanks to its much better compatibility.
